Terry Young was named Chief of Police for the City of Surprise in July 2015.
He began his career with Surprise PD in 2010 after retiring as Deputy Chief from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, where he led and developed their Professional Standards Division.
Throughout his 25+ years in the Valley, Chief Young has fostered a culture of exceptional service through community engagement and partnerships, and has excelled in Patrol Operations, Investigations, Professional Standards, Personnel Management, Occupational Safety, Legal Compliance, Policy & Organizational Development, and Pre-Employment Services.
He holds a B.S. in Applied Management from Grand Canyon University and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. A graduate of Northwestern’s School of Police Staff & Command and the FBI National Academy, he also spent nearly a decade as an adjunct professor at Grand Canyon University.
Chief Young is married and has two sons.
