Surprise Police Department – Terry Young

Terry Young was named the Chief of Police, City of Surprise, in July 2015.

He began his career with the Surprise Police Department in 2010 after retiring as a Deputy Chief from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. His extensive experience was sought after to take command and develop the department’s Professional Standards Division.

Throughout his career, Chief Young has promoted a culture of exceptional service focused on community engagement and partnerships.

During his more than 25 years in law enforcement in the valley, Chief Young has achieved success in a wide variety of law enforcement functions, including: Patrol Operations, Investigations, Professional Standards, Personnel Management, Occupational Safety, Legal Compliance, Policy Development, Organizational Development, and Pre-Employment Services.

Chief Young earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Applied Management from Grand Canyon University and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. He is a graduate of the prestigious School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University, as well as the FBI National Academy. For nearly 10 years Chief Young shared his knowledge and experience as an adjunct professor for Grand Canyon University.

Chief Young is married and has two sons.
